The holiday season can be a difficult time of year for many of us. There can be events to attend, family expectations or you may be spending the holidays alone. Know that it’s okay to acknowledge your feelings and consider how you will care for yourself during this time.
Practice self-compassion – this means extending the same love and care to yourself, that you show to others. Be kind to yourself. Introduction to Self-Compassion – SAMSN Survivors & Mates Support Network
Setting boundaries – these are limits that we set for ourselves within our relationships. Holding healthy boundaries with others are an important part of caring for ourselves, helping us to feel safe and in control of what we do and whom we spend our time with.
Grounding – if you are feeling overwhelmed and need a break, take some time for you. Are there things that help to ground you and bring you into the present? You could go and sit outside, do some deep breathing or a meditation. Listen to some music or make yourself a warm drink. SAMSN has Grounding exercises – SAMSN Survivors & Mates Support Network that you could try.
Put together a plan – during the holidays to do some things you love – watching a favourite movie, read a book you enjoy, cook your favourite meal, or going outside to for a walk. Make sure you schedule some time for you to recharge and rest.
SAMSN has a section on Wellbeing – SAMSN Survivors & Mates Support Network which also includes other relaxation and mindfulness exercises and practices that you could try for self-care during the holidays.
