Recovery workshops

Recovery workshops for male survivors, their family members & supporters

Session 1: Male Survivors of Child Sexual Abuse
Session 2: Survivors & Supporters

This one-day workshop is broken into two sessions: the morning session is exclusively for male survivors while the afternoon session is open to people supporting adult male survivors in any capacity including family members and friends.

Male survivors are able to attend one or both sessions and support people can attend session 2 regardless of whether or not the person they are supporting attends.

Aims of the workshops:

  • Provide information about childhood trauma including sexual abuse and what is involved in the recovery process.
  • Help survivors understand they are not alone in their efforts to recover and to encourage them to take steps in their own recovery.
  • Help equip family members and friends with information to support adult male survivors in their lives.

The workshops will explore ways in which child sexual abuse is harmful and how this harm can continue into adulthood. We look at how grooming is used to enable vulnerable children to be abused and how this can increase feelings of shame and guilt for adult survivors.

In the Survivors & Supporters session we will provide general information around abuse and issues affecting survivors, as well as examining ways in which survivors can be encouraged and supported in their recovery. The founding directors of SAMSN will contribute by sharing their experiences of recovery, the legal system and their advocacy work as well as what they have learned from both organising and participating in SAMSN’s groups and workshops. Time will be set aside for a Q&A.

The workshop will be conducted by SAMSN’s consultant psychologist, Mark Griffiths. Mark has nearly thirty years experience working with men and women who have been sexually assaulted in their childhood and has co-facilitated over forty groups for male survivors of child sexual abuse.

Please note that this workshop is not a counselling session and is not intended to replace therapy. There is no cost to attend.
